'Look Within (feat. Karen Saunders)' was the first release to be signed as J Plates by Russian label Liquid Brilliants Records back in 2012 and released as part of the 'New Year Brilliants' compilation album at the start of 2013.

As a special Xmas exclusive gift to you, I'm giving away the previously unreleased 'Dubplate B-Side Instrumental' version I made as a flip side to the single, cut to Dubplate by The Carvery, London.

"After listening to the instrumental track, Karen initially came up with the main vocal hook, which I thought was amazing and perfectly fitting for the track. I then went away and wrote what became the verses, in order to tell a bit more of a story and to expand on the sentiments of Karens hook.

What you hear on the track is literally the first recorded take, which I thought contained such an authentic performance and the right kind of unsteady emotion that we decided to keep it as is. I then went away and produced the vocals further, adding the harmony effect layers and outro section from material left over from that afternoons recording session.

Looking back on the session and process, I think Look Within captures a certain headspace I was in at the time and still holds up to this day, especially in light of how much technology dominates our lives, but also the experiences we've all faced during 2020, some 7 years later." - J Plates
